The "Rattentoren" is a remnant of Roermond's fortifications, located on Grote Kerkstraat near the St. Christopher Cathedral. Built in the late 14th century, this round corner tower was one of twenty that formed the city's defensive wall. Originally known as the "Clock Tower" and "Golden Tower," it was renamed "Witch Tower" in the early 17th century when used as a prison for women accused of witchcraft. By the 18th century, the dilapidated tower's surroundings became a dumping ground, leading to its current name, "Rattentoren." In 1976, the municipality of Roermond restored the tower, adding a new spire. Since 1987, it has housed puppet theater 'De Klaproos.' The first floor features a model of medieval Roermond and an exhibition on the tower's and city's history.
