Description

The "Iwema-Steenhuis", also known as "Iwemastins", is a late medieval stone house located in #Niebert (Groningen). Built around 1400, it is the only remaining structure in the province that has retained the characteristics of a "steenhuis" (stone house). Unlike many others, it was never inhabited by a noble family and therefore did not evolve into a borg (manor house). Originally a residential tower measuring 10 by 7 meters with walls approximately 65 centimeters thick, it featured an external staircase on its southern side until the late 19th century. Around 1850, the building underwent significant renovations, being integrated into a white-plastered farm house with the addition of a barn on the west side.
