Description

The "Jekertoren", also known as the "Rondeeltoren" or "Maaspunttoren", is a former wall tower in Maastricht, Netherlands. Built in the 13th century as the southeastern corner tower of the city's first medieval fortifications, it is located at the bend where the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwewal turns west. The tower served as a key defensive structure, connecting the city's walls along the Maas River to the southern and western fortifications. Despite the construction of a second city wall in the late 14th century, the Jekertoren remained in use due to limited space along the Maas and its proximity to the Liège territory of Sint Pieter. In the late 15th century, as military tactics evolved, the tower was lowered and filled with earth to function as a gun platform. In 1911, it underwent restoration and partial reconstruction. Today, the Jekertoren stands as a significant remnant of Maastricht's medieval city walls and is recognized as a national monument.
