Description

The Hungarian Parliament Building, a neo-gothic masterpiece by architect Imre Steindl, is located on Budapest's Pest side along the Danube. Inspired by Vienna's City Hall and Maria vom Siege church, it deliberately echoed London's Palace of Westminster. After Budapest's 1873 unification of Buda, Óbuda, and Pest, an international competition selected Steindl's design in 1880. Construction started in 1885, aiming for the nation's 1,000th anniversary in 1896; inaugurated then but fully completed in 1902-1904 using 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones, and 40 kg of gold.
