Description

"Frederiksborg Slot", Scandinavia's largest renaissance residence, rises on three islets in #Hillerød. Originally the noble estate Hillerødsholm, it became a royal hunting lodge under Frederick II after 1550, who expanded it with stables, towers, and the elegant 1581 Bath House. His son Christian IV demolished the old buildings in 1599 and rebuilt the entire complex in grand Flemish-Dutch renaissance style between 1599 and 1620. The four-storey palace features three joined wings, stepped gables, soaring towers and spires, sandstone ornaments, mythological sculptures glorifying the king, and the masterpiece Neptune Fountain. The Chapel and Audience Chamber largely escaped the 1859 fire that ravaged much of the interior; the castle was meticulously reconstructed by the 1880s using old plans and paintings.
