Description

The Welle in Deventer features a restored medieval defense tower, part of the city's original fortifications. Constructed around 1230, this semicircular tower was designed to project outward, allowing defenders to target attackers more effectively. The tower includes both large, now-sealed openings for pre-gunpowder weapons and smaller gunports added after gunpowder's introduction in 1348. Over time, Deventer expanded its defenses with additional walls and towers. While many fortifications were dismantled after 1880 to accommodate urban growth, remnants like the Welle tower remain, offering insight into the city's medieval military architecture.
