The Nieuwersluis barracks complex, built 1878-1881 in neo-renaissance style, lies on the Vecht’s east side within the old fortress in #Nieuwersluis (Utrecht). Designed by military engineers, it included a Pupillenschool, King Willem III barracks, drill sheds, and housing. Chosen for its Utrecht-Amsterdam rail link and space, the fortress was partly filled in 1877, losing its defensive role.
