"Kasteel Wittem" was built in the 13th century by Winand van Julemont in #Wittem (Limburg). It was later expanded by Johan van Cosselaer around 1344. In 1520, Emperor Charles V stayed there. During the Dutch Revolt, it was confiscated by the Spanish. The castle changed hands several times, including to the Waldeck and Plettenberg families. French troops partly demolished it in 1679. From 1764, the Merckelbach family restored it in neo-gothic style.
