Archaeological excavations around the The Basilica of Our Lady in Tongeren (Limburg) in Belgium have revealed structures dating back to the 4th century, including a Merovingian church and a Carolingian prayer house from the 9th century. The current gothic basilica began construction in 1240, with the choir being the first section built. The nave, transepts, and side chapels were added between the 13th and 15th centuries. The original romanesque bell tower was replaced by the present 64-meter gothic tower, constructed between 1442 and 1541. Inside, the basilica houses a statue of Our Lady of Tongeren, dating from 1475.
