Description

The town hall of #Liège, also known as "La Violette", is located centrally at the Place du Marché. The original building, dating back to the 13th century, served as a meeting place for citizens and was the site where the first mayors were elected, independent of the prince-bishops residing nearby. This structure faced multiple reconstructions, notably after its destruction by Burgundian troops under Charles the Bold in 1468 during the Liège Wars, and again following French bombardment in 1691 during the Nine Years' War, which left the entire Place du Marché area in ruins. The current building's construction began on August 14, 1714, designed by French architect D'Auberat, the court architect of Prince-Bishop Joseph Clemens of Bavaria. This monumental early 18th-century edifice, exemplifying Liège baroque architecture, features a U-shaped layout with richly decorated interiors, including stucco work, wall and ceiling paintings, and marble fireplaces.
