Description

The post office in #Hasselt (Limburg), Belgium, a monumental eclectic-style complex with neo-baroque elements, was built in 1899. The building features seven bays and three stories under a mansard roof with artificial slates and five dormers. The brick building has a list facade with natural stone cladding, hardstone bands, and a hardstone base. Horizontal articulation is provided by these bands and hardstone cordons. A risaliet in the second bay forms a built-in tower, rising two stories above the cornice, topped with a tented roof, corner spires, and a lantern with a pinched spire. Another risaliet in the fifth bay has a curved pediment with an aedicula and decorative vases. The entablature, with a heavy hardstone drip molding and dentil motif, is supported by pilasters. Windows vary: rectangular on the first two floors, arched on the third, framed in profiled hardstone. The three doors feature transoms, with the rightmost having a triangular pediment.
