Description

The "Hydepark" estate in #Doorn (Utrecht) began in 1816 when merchant H.P. Hoff built a modest villa with neo-gothic windows on reclaimed heathland. After several owners, banker Hendrik van Loon acquired it in 1885, commissioning architect J.N. Landré to erect a grand neo-renaissance mansion inspired by Amsterdam's Centraal Station and Rijksmuseum. Landré also designed the eclectic Oranjerie (1887-1888) in Louis XIV style, with three domes linked by balustrades, high arched windows, and ornate carvings. Garden architect Hendrik Copijn laid out the late landscape-style park with geometric elements, berceaus, grottos, ice cellar, and walled kitchen garden. In WWII, the mansion was destroyed by explosion. Surviving historic structures include gatehouses, coach house remnants, farm buildings, stables, and the monumental oranjerie amid vistas and avenues.
