"Kasteel van Wijnendale" is a moated fortress in the wooded Wijnendale Forest near #Wijnendale (West-Vlaanderen), Belgium. Mostly rebuilt in the 19th century with some 15th-century sections, it was founded in the late 11th century by Robert the Frisian. It served Flemish counts as a residence, hunting lodge, and diplomatic venue. It passed through the Counts of Namur, Burgundian dukes, Cleves-Ravenstein lords (who made it a hunting castle), and Palatinate-Neuburg dukes. Damaged in various wars (including 1488, 1578, 1690), it was the site of the 1708 Battle of Wijnendale. Confiscated during the French Revolution and largely destroyed in 1811, it was fully reconstructed 1837-1852 and romanticized in 1877 by the Matthieu family.
