"Schweriner Schloss", on an island in Lake Schwerin near #Schwerin, traces its origins to a Slavic fort around the 10th century. A castle was built in 1160 after Henry the Lion's conquest. It became a ducal residence, with major renaissance expansion under Duke Johann Albrecht I from 1560. The current romantic historicist appearance, neo-renaissance style with French châteaux influences, turrets, golden dome, ornate interiors, arose from a grand rebuild 1845-1857 under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II, designed by architects like Georg Adolf Demmler, Friedrich August Stüler and Gottfried Semper.
