Description

Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in #Melk, was founded in 1089 when Margrave Leopold II donated a Babenberg castle to monks. Perched on a rocky outcrop above the Danube, it became a key spiritual & cultural center. The current baroque structure was built 1702-1736 (completed ~1746) by architect Jakob Prandtauer, with later work by Josef Munggenast. Highlights include the grand church with frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr & Paul Troger, an ornate library and a marble hall.
