The Royal Palace of #Madrid stands on the site of a 9th-century Muslim fortress and later Alcázar, destroyed by fire in 1734. Commissioned by Philip V, construction began in 1738 and finished in 1764 under Charles III. Designed in baroque style with Berniniesque influences by Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Sacchetti (plus neoclassical elements by Francesco Sabatini), it features a grand square layout, central courtyard, projecting wings, stone façade with Ionic columns, and opulent interiors. It's Europe's largest royal palace by floor area (3.418 rooms).
