The Metropolitan Cathedral of #MexicoCity, Latin America's largest cathedral, stands on the north side of the Zócalo atop the ruins of the Aztec Templo Mayor. Construction began in 1573 (planned by Claudio de Arciniega, inspired by Spanish Gothic models) and finished in 1813, spanning nearly 250 years. It features a mix of styles: gothic, renaissance/plateresque, baroque and neoclassical elements. The basilica plan has five naves, two towers, and a dome.
