Description

The "Church of the Assumption" stands on Bled Island in #Bled. Its site has held sacred significance since pre-Christian Slavic times and early Christian chapels (8th-9th century). The first stone romanesque church was built in 1142. It was rebuilt in gothic style in the 15th century, with a freestanding bell tower. Damaged by earthquakes (notably 1509), it received its current baroque form in the late 17th century, featuring a 52 meter tower, rich gilded altars, and preserved 15th-century gothic frescoes in the chancel.
