"Castel Sant'Angelo" in #Rome, originally the Mausoleum of Hadrian, was commissioned by Emperor Hadrian (123-139 AD) as a grand cylindrical tomb for himself and his family, inspired by Augustus' mausoleum. Designed by architect Demetriano, it featured a square marble base, drum, earthen tumulus with trees, and bronze statues. Connected by Ponte Sant'Angelo, it later became a fortress integrated into Rome's defenses. From the Middle Ages, popes converted it into a papal residence, prison, and refuge, adding fortifications and renaissance interiors.
