The town hall of #Sydney was built 1869-1889 on the site of Sydney's first European cemetery. Constructed of local Pyrmont sandstone in ornate Victorian Second Empire style (inspired by Paris's Hôtel de Ville), it features mansard roofs, corner towers, domed pavilions, elaborate pediments, and rich sculptural decoration. Designed by architects including J.H. Willson, Albert Bond, and George McRae, its two stages culminated in the Centennial Hall (opened 1890) with one of the world's largest organs at the time.
