"Arundel Castle" in #Arundel, was founded in 1067 by Roger de Montgomery as a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress overlooking the River Arun. The oldest parts include the 1068 motte (artificial mound), 1070 gatehouse, and 12th-century stone shell keep built by William d'Albini, with much of the early stonework from King Henry II's era. It served as the seat of the Earls of Arundel and later the Dukes of Norfolk. Damaged during the English Civil War, it underwent major restorations in the 18th-19th centuries, including a grand Gothic Revival rebuild.
