The Belfry of #Douai π«π· is the city's symbol of urban independence. Built between 1380 and 1410 on the site of an earlier wooden tower, it rose from stones of the demolished 1149 Cantin castle. Flemish sandstone formed its sturdy core, with a gothic wing to the west and a chapel added to the south. A carillon arrived in 1391 (today 62 bells). Lightning later struck and burned the spire; the tower was rebuilt by 1475.
