Description

The Belfry of Herentals (Antwerpen), originally known as the 'gulden huys' before 1430, served as a meeting and weighing house. In 1430, it was designated as the town hall. During the 15th century, cloth makers and wool weavers reconstructed it into a cloth hall. After a devastating fire in 1512, the building was rebuilt in 1534 using Lediaan sandstone, and a 35-meter-high belfry tower made of red Oevelse brick was added. Today, the belfry houses a carillon with 49 bells.
