Description

The St. Rumbold's Cathedral in Mechelen (Antwerpen), Belgium, serves as the principal church of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. Construction began in the 13th century, with the church being consecrated in 1312. The cathedral is renowned for its 97-meter-high tower, originally intended to reach 167 meters, but construction halted around 1520. This tower, featuring two carillons, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Belfries of Belgium and France." The interior showcases a baroque high altar and choir by Lucas Faydherbe, along with artworks by Anthony van Dyck and Michiel Coxie. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Rumbold, an Irish missionary and martyr believed to have founded an abbey nearby.
