Description

The "Koninklijk Atheneum" in #Antwerpen, built in 1882-84 by Pieter Jan August Dens and Ferdinand J.A. Truyman, is an eclectic neo-renaissance sandstone building. It features a raised ground floor, two to three stories, and slate roofing, arranged around two rectangular courtyards. The ornate front façade has a pseudo-mansard roof, corner and central risalits, pilasters, and round-arched windows. Sculptures symbolize Poetry, Science, and Education. The side and rear façades are simpler, with rectangular windows and subtle risalits. The interior includes a neoclassical hall with marble walls, Doric columns, and a mosaic floor. A grand staircase leads to an eclectic festival hall with Corinthian columns and murals. The gymnasium and auditorium feature wooden roofs, and science classrooms retain neoclassical cabinets.
