Fosses-la-Ville
•
Namur
Belgium
Constructed in: 1895
Typology: town hall
Architect: L. Van Langendonck
The old town hall of #FossesLaVille (Namur) began as a medieval covered market hall with the council meeting upstairs. From the 18th century onward, the building was cramped, cold, dirty, and inadequate. By 1890 the structure was declared unsafe and unworthy of a canton capital. The council approved a loan, expropriated neighbouring houses, and held a design competition. Architect Van Langendonck's eclectic brick design was selected. The new town hall was built between 1895 and 1899.
