Description

"Den Cruywagen" (French: "Maison de la Brouette"), on the Grand Place of #Brussel, is a baroque guildhall of the grease merchants who sold butter, cheese, oil, and candles. First acquired in 1439, it was rebuilt in stone in 1644-45, nearly destroyed in the 1695 French bombardment, then reconstructed in 1696-97 by architect Jan Cosijn. Its four-bay façade gleams with pilasters, gilded cartouches (two showing a golden wheelbarrow), spiral columns, fruit garlands, and a pediment topped by St. Giles with a hind.
