"Palazzo Pubblico" in #Siena, begun in 1297 as the government seat for the Republic of Siena's Podestà and Council of Nine, is a landmark of medieval gothic architecture on Piazza del Campo. Its gently concave brick façade, with a stone base and richly ornamented trefoil pointed-arch windows, echoes the square's convex curve. The soaring Torre del Mangia bell tower (1325-1344), once Italy's tallest and designed to surpass Florence's, features a Lippo Memmi crown and mid-14th-century clock. A large Christogram disc was added atop the palace in 1425 to honor native preacher Saint Bernardino for quelling factional unrest.
