"Monk Bar", the tallest and most elaborate medieval gateway in #York, was built in the early 14th century (replacing a 12th-century gate on a Roman site) as a self-contained fortress. Four storeys high, it features defensive elements like arrow slits, murder holes, a working portcullis, and circular bartizans. The top storey was added in 1484 under Richard III.
