The "Arco da Rua Augusta" is a 30 meter tall neoclassical triumphal arch in #Lisbon. It commemorates the city's reconstruction after the devastating 1755 earthquake, tsunami, and fire. Construction began in the 1750s-1770s under the Pombaline rebuilding plan (initially designed by Eugénio dos Santos as a simple structure, possibly a bell tower). It evolved over a century, with the final elaborate design by Veríssimo José da Costa completed in 1873. Architecturally, it features six towering columns, statues of Portuguese heroes, allegorical figures, the national coat of arms, and a Latin inscription meaning "The Virtues of the Greatest."
